Happy Earth Day!

Even if you don't know a ton about "being green" (like me), there are some simple things that everyone can do on a regular basis to help the environment. I have decided to make an effort to increase my own "green-ness" and want to teach Ally about the things she can do to help the environment, so she and one day her children will have a nice place to live.

Some Simple Earth Day Tips:
*RECYCLE!!!
*Buy and use the reusable grocery bags
*Unplug your cell phone charger from the wall when you are not charging your phone

*Turn off lights and electrical appliances when you are not using them
*Wash your clothes in cold water (cold water gets your clothes just as clean as warm water)
*Donate your old clothes to charity (or maybe our friend Crys can turn them into great new green fashions for her green clothing label: Label Yourself!!)
*Switch to paperless billing and pay your bills online (Really, all you folks out there who are scared of paying bills online...you'll be fine!!! I have been doing it for years and have had no problems that I wouldn't have had with paper statements!)
*Turn the water off when you are brushing your teeth or washing the dishes

*Slow down in the car...stop speeding! (studies have proven that for every 5 mph you go over 65mph greatly reduces the gas mileage you're getting)
*Plant trees in your yard and community
*Get some live plants to help with the air quality in your home
*Carpool when possible
*On nice spring and summer days, line dry your clothes (you will be helping the environment AND your clothes will smell great!)
*Set your thermostat comfortably low in the winter and comfortably high in the summer. Install a programmable thermostat that is compatible with your heating and cooling system
*Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120° F
*Clean or replace filters on furnaces at least once a month
*Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing

HAPPY EARTH DAY EVERYONE!! Please take care of our Earth...we only have one!

I LOVE being green! We've been living more "gently" for about five years now and it's SO easy when you make small changes here and there. My newest? I quickly handwipe the lunch dishes because it typically isn't a heavy meal requiring space in the dishwasher. Saves water and space in my washer PLUS I've been able to cut out an entire run! (We normally go through two runs a day--six people can generate A LOT of dirty everythings!) Switched to all cold water laundry last Earth Day, along with using cloth napkins and those were the simpliest modifications I've made yet!
Loved the post! This world needs our help, right? Our kids are counting on it...
